Utu Kilimo Initiative launches at Timau River Lodge

Utu Heritage has initiated Utu Kilimo — a heritage-rooted agriculture programme — beginning at Timau River Lodge, where citrus under net is the first working demonstration.

Utu Kilimo starts from a conclusion the field work keeps producing: communities cannot defend heritage from hunger. Documentation, language revival and forest protection all survive longer where households have food and income they control.

The initiative was launched at Timau River Lodge, on the Timau–Nanyuki belt where the same water politics documented at Porini plays out. The first demonstration plot is citrus grown under netting — lemons and oranges raised with water discipline, soil cover and indigenous companion planting rather than heavy irrigation abstraction.

The design is deliberately reproducible at household scale. Netting reduces water loss and pest pressure. Compost and mulch rebuild soils exhausted by monocropping. Bee-friendly planting ties the plot back to the honey economies that Utu Heritage supports in Mukogodo and elsewhere.

Around the plot sits the training programme: propagation and grafting, water harvesting, organic pest management, post-harvest handling, and market linkage so growers are not price-takers at the gate. Young people and women's groups are the priority intake.

Utu Kilimo is now the agency's flagship current work — the economic limb of a single argument. Historical justice, ecological justice and economic justice are one struggle, and a lemon tree that pays for a child's school fees is heritage policy as much as any archive.

“Food sovereignty and heritage sovereignty are the same sovereignty.”

Al-Amin Kimathi (Babu), founder, Utu Heritage
